Compost is a soil amendment made from organic matter and is integral to keeping your soil thriving and your plants healthy. For overall soil health and plant vigor, the U.S. Composting Council recommends augmenting your soil to a minimum of 5% organic matter.

Mulch performs important work in the garden: retaining moisture, keeping the soil cool and suppressing weeds. It also helps improve soil structure and nutrient-holding capacity as it breaks down. Western’s mulch is made from ground yard waste dropped at our Trash & Recycle Center — 100% local!

Wood Waste

Drop your clean wood waste (unpainted, unstained, untreated lumber and pallets) at Western Disposal. We’ll grind it then repurpose it as feedstock for local composters. City of Boulder and Boulder County residents receive a 40% discount on published wood waste drop-off pricing.

Wood waste delivered by contractors from construction job sites or generated by commercial businesses are not eligible to receive a subsidy from the city of Boulder or Boulder County.

The following clean wood waste, meaning UNTREATED, UNSTAINED AND UNPAINTED, is accepted at the wood waste drop-off:

  • Dimensional lumber
  • Cutoffs
  • Pallets
  • OSB
  • Plywood
  • Particleboard
  • Other engineered wood products (I-joists and microlams)

The following materials are NOT ACCEPTED at the wood waste drop-off and must be processed as trash:

  • Painted or stained wood
  • Chemically treated wood (CCA, Creosol, others)
  • Plastic wood products (wood-polymer lumber)

Why aren’t these items accepted? This material is ground and sold as mulch and the toxicity of treated lumber is not suitable for this purpose.

Yard Waste

Yard waste dropped at Western Disposal is converted into mulch rather than being landfilled. Yard waste materials taken to a traditional landfill decompose anaerobically, emitting methane — a potent greenhouse gas. Many of our residential customers have options for disposing of yard waste by way of our curbside collection service, but residential curbside collection is not an option for everyone — so bring your yard waste material to us! The yard waste drop-off is subsidized by the city of Boulder and Boulder County, so residents receive a 40% discount on normal yard waste drop-off pricing.

Yard waste delivered by commercial landscapers is not eligible to receive a subsidy by the city of Boulder or Boulder County.

The following materials are accepted at the yard waste drop-off:

  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Weeds
  • Flowers
  • Sawdust
  • Branches less than 12″ in diameter

This material is NOT accepted and should be processed as trash:

  • Sod
  • Woody waste over 12” in diameter
  • Animal droppings
  • Dirt
  • Rock
