There is huge opportunity to recycle items that cannot go into your curbside bin. Often referred to as ‘hard-to-recycle’, these items are typically heavy, bulky or require special handling or disposal. Accessibility and convenience are key to increasing recycling participation, and when designing our new Materials Management Center (MMC), located at 2051 63rd Street in Boulder, making room for additional recycling options for our customers was at the top of the list.
In addition to materials we currently accept for recycling including yard waste, wood waste, concrete, metals & appliances, food waste and single-stream,
WE ARE NOW RECYCLING:
Electronics
‘Where do I take my electronics?’ is one of the most common questions we’re asked. The answer? Bring them to Western’s new Materials Management Center.
Small Household Appliances
While household appliances are ALLOWED in the landfill, they don’t have to go in the trash! Appliances such as hair dryers, curling irons, vacuum cleaners, coffee makers, microwaves – basically anything with a motor and a cord can be recycled. Yes, even the hard plastic gets a second life.
Both electronics and small household appliances are processed by e-stewards certified Blue Star Recyclers, who last year recycled 21 million pounds of material, while creating permanent jobs for individuals with disABILITIES.
Mattresses and Box Springs
We now have room to store mattresses and box springs for recycling. Collected items will be transported to Spring Back Colorado, located in Commerce City. Their recycling process breaks down over 90% of each mattress into individual components and recycles or re-purposes them.
On-demand Shredding Services
The MMC features a ‘Shred Shack’ outfitted with a high-capacity industrial shredding machine. Residential and commercial customers can visit the MMC for document shredding on site, Monday through Saturday. Security? Handled. Documents will be shredded while you wait. This new service replaces our annual shred events. The price for shredding is $12 per copy box or 32-gallon bag. And of course, the shredded paper is recycled.
Curbside Collection – The Ultimate in Convenience
Are you short on time or simply don’t have a vehicle to transport your recyclable items to the Materials Management Center? Try our Recycle Express service! We’ll come to your curb to collect hard-to-recycle materials including electronics, small household appliances, large appliances, and other metals (think BBQ grill, swing sets, fencing), mattresses, and more.
This service is available to households throughout Boulder and Broomfield counties, even if Western is not your waste collection provider.
