Our “one-stop drop” Trash & Recycle Center accepts wood and yard waste and converts it into mulch, available for free at our facility. We offer two types of mulch — a blond color made from recycled wood and an earthy brown made from yard waste. Boulder County and City residents receive a 40 percent discount on these services, so load up and bring us your outdoor waste!
Wood waste can be recycled at discounted rates through programs subsidized by local government and administered by Western Disposal. We grind the wood collected through this program into clean wood mulch that is reused throughout our community in a number of ways, including landscaping, animal bedding and on playgrounds.
City of Boulder and Boulder County residents receive a 40 percent discount on regular wood waste drop-off pricing.
Wood waste delivered by contractors from construction job sites or delivered by commercial businesses do not receive a subsidy by the City of Boulder or Boulder County, but the fee for clean wood waste for recycling is 30 percent less than our fee for construction waste as trash, so it is well worth the effort to bring us this waste separately!
The following clean wood waste — meaning that it is UNTREATED, UNSTAINED AND UNPAINTED — is accepted at the wood waste drop-off:
- Dimensional lumber
- Other engineered wood products (I-joists and microlams)
The following materials are NOT ACCEPTED at the wood waste drop-off:
- Painted or stained wood
- Chemically treated wood (CCA, Creosol, others)
- Plastic wood products (wood-polymer lumber)
Why aren’t these items accepted? We grind our material into mulch and offer the material back to the community for free. As a result, the toxicity of treated lumber is not suitable for this purpose.
Organic yard waste — material that can be converted into wood mulch rather than being landfilled as trash — is also welcome at our “one-stop drop” Trash & Recycle Center. Yard waste materials taken to a traditional landfill decompose anaerobically, or without oxygen, emitting methane — a potent greenhouse gas. Many of our residential customers have options for disposing of yard waste by way of our curbside collection service, but residential curbside collection is not an option for everyone — so bring your yard waste material to us! The yard waste drop-off is subsidized by the City of Boulder and Boulder County, so residents receive a 40 percent discount from normal yard waste drop-off pricing. Rather than going to the landfill, your yard waste will be processed into mulch that is available at no cost.
The following materials are acceptable at the yard waste drop-off:
- Grass clippings
- Food waste (both vegetable and meat)
These items are NOT accepted:
- Woody waste over 12” in diameter
- Animal droppings
- Lumber (accepted at our Wood Waste Drop-off)
- Construction debris
- Dirt, rock, brick or pavers
